Up to four effects can be used simultaneously, including multiple instances of the same effect. This allows you to create both simple effect combinations and complex signal chains. Effects can be arranged in series and reordered as needed.
With the BOSS EX-4 Effects Expander, you can create serial and parallel effect setups, including wet/dry options. Standalone function blocks such as Foot Volume, Noise Suppressor, Send/Return, and Divider/Mixer can be placed anywhere in the effects chain.
The built-in effects loop allows you to connect external pedals in series and arrange them freely within the EX-4 effects chain. Additionally, a global EQ is available for overall tone shaping.
A 2.4" full-color display clearly shows the entire effects chain, individual effect blocks, editing functions, and menus. Separate FX buttons allow you to enable and disable effect blocks with a short press. A long press opens the editing parameters.
The two rugged multifunction footswitches with split LEDs can be configured system-wide or individually per preset. Possible functions include turning effect blocks on and off, navigating up or down through presets, master bypass, and tap tempo.

The Gear Suite feature enables quick sound design. Ready-to-play effects can be accessed directly, and favorite parameter settings can be saved for each effect type. Seamless memory slot switching with fully decaying delay and reverb is possible with certain effect configurations.
The Boss EX-4 Effects Expander offers a total of four audio connections for mono or stereo operation. If needed, two connections can be used as an effects loop to flexibly integrate external pedals.
For additional real-time control, two footswitches or an expression pedal can be connected. TRS MIDI input and output allow for the integration of MIDI pedals, switching systems, and external metronomes.
