Boss RE-2 Product Details

Description

The original Space Echo sound in a compact pedal.

Introduced in 1974 and produced without interruption for 14 years, the Roland RE-201 Space Echo is one of the most legendary and sought-after effects units of all time. With its rhythmic, warm echo sounds and distinctive, highly musical quirks and idiosyncrasies, the analog tape echo classic has inspired musicians, producers and sound engineers for over four decades. With the RE-2, BOSS transfers the sound and effect behavior of the Space Echo original to the famous compact pedal series for the first time. Based on intensive development work and new technological innovations, the RE-2 delivers the coveted magic of the RE-201 in a compact pedalboard format - recreated down to the last detail by the creators of the original.

RE-201 Space Echo: Simply Legendary

The RE-201 was one of the leading tape echoes of its time. With its three equally spaced tone heads and an integrated spring reverb tank, the Space Echo could create almost any echo sound - from simple, clean delays to dense, rhythmic echo and ambient washes. The RE-201's legendary sound was influenced by numerous factors, including the warm compression of magnetic tape saturation, dynamic modulation from fluctuating motor speed, friction, and other elements. The final crucial ingredient for the Space Echo's sonic diversity was the analog preamp circuitry.

The rebirth of a masterpiece

With the RE-2 and its big brother - the RE-202 - BOSS designers have captured in all its details the complex, non-linear behavior of the RE-201 that directly contributed to its legendary status. To do this, we analyzed several vintage units, including a pristine original from the BOSS and Roland factory archives. All factors affecting the sound were meticulously examined and recreated with all-new algorithms - including tape run, record/playback mechanism, variations in motor run speed, coloration from the preamp, spring reverb character, and more.

Journey into the depths of space

The RE-2 combines the big sound character of the RE-201 in the classic BOSS compact pedal format. The eleven-position mode selector lets you choose the different virtual tone heads, each with and without spring reverb. In addition, the ratio of echo and reverb can be adjusted via separate level controls. Each behavior is recreated in great detail, such as the gradual change in pitch via Repeat Rate adjustments, or the uncontrolled feedback when the Intensity knob is turned all the way up. In addition, the Wow & Flutter control can be used to create all the natural modulations that are essential to the original Space Echo sound.

Designed for modern musicians

The RE-2 expands the classic Space Echo experience with new and flexible features for modern musicians. Not only has the delay time been doubled and tap-tempo input added. The twist function also lets you create expressive special effects while performing. For the dry sound, you can choose between the warm and fat preamp of the RE-201 or a clean signal without any processing. In addition to true stereo inputs and outputs, the dry signal can even be completely muted to create parallel effects setups or use the effects signal in studio productions. In addition, the RE-2 supports the use of external footswitches or an expression pedal - including smooth, parallel control of multiple functions.
