The PLASMA Coil is a special edition of Gamechanger Audio's PLASMA pedal - the world's first commercial high-voltage analog audio processor.
Instead of LED circuits, transistors or traditional vacuum tubes, the PLASMA COIL converts your instrument's signal into a series of electrical pulses that are sent to a step-up fly-back transformer. The transformer amplifies these surges to thousands of volts, and the current discharges into a special gas-filled tube. The discharge generated by the transformer creates powerful electromagnetic waves that can be picked up by a special antenna or pickup, de-modulated, and converted back into an audio signal. In this way, PLASMA COIL is able to convert instrument level signals into thousands of volts and convert these electrical energy surges back into an audio signal.
Unusual harmonic saturation:
When an audio signal is driven by a step-up transformer, all the harmonics and overtones present in the original signal are greatly emphasized. In addition, the transformer and gas tube system create a certain amount of "noise pollution" that could be described as "crackle" or "hum," which adds an electrical quality to the sound.
Noise-Gating Features:
The VOLTAGE control allows you to adjust the amount of current sent to the PLASMA COIL's discharge tube. At low settings, only strong signals will generate enough current to connect the electrodes, resulting in a distinct gated sound. When the signal drops below a certain threshold, the current flow in the gas-filled tube is interrupted and the pedal stops producing an output signal. This feature allows you to achieve extreme contrasts between individual notes by suppressing all intermediate noise produced by the instrument's pickups or by buzzing strings. The gating effect can also be used to significantly alter the instrument's response to various picking and strumming techniques and the reverberation of notes.
Extremely Wide EQ:
The PLASMA COIL discharges the original DRY input signal between the electrodes of the PLASMA tube and generates a new audio signal from the fluctuations in the electromagnetic field surrounding the transformer and gas discharge tube. In this way, an extremely wide range of frequencies can be extracted, often beyond the capabilities of the instrument. Take a Telecaster, plug it into the PLASMA COIL and turn up the LOW end - you will hear twice as much bass as the instrument can produce under normal circumstances.
