The Ibanez LD303 Multi Delay Effects Pedal—also described as a Layer Delayer—offers a comprehensive set of features for musicians who want to use delay not just as a classic repetition effect, but as a creative tool for new sonic textures.
At its core is a concept that goes beyond conventional tape echoes. The delay time is set to a quarter note, while the pedal generates matching 16th-note and triplet delay signals. The volume of these delay signals can be controlled independently, and each can be amplified by up to 3 dB. This creates rhythmic layers that can be precisely shaped, adding more movement, depth, and structure to the signal.
The Ibanez LD303 Multi Delay effects pedal offers three different delay types via the TONE control: Digital, Analog, and Tape Echo. These sounds gradually blend into one another, opening up a wide sonic palette. Depending on the setting, the delay signal can sound clear, warm, or full of character. The effect is therefore suitable for subtle tone shaping as well as for clearly audible rhythmic structures.
In addition, the pedal features a FILTER effect that emulates a classic low-pass ladder filter. High resonance with an adjustable cutoff frequency delivers the distinctive, edgy character of this filter type. When the resonance is set to zero, a more standard low-pass filter characteristic results. This allows you to specifically shape the timbre of the delay signal, ranging from subtle warmth to aggressive distortion.
The Tail function ensures that the delayed signal continues to decay even after the effect is turned off. The TAIL DECAY control adjusts the feedback level of the tail and determines how long the delayed signal decays. When set to 0, true bypass behavior is achieved, where the output is immediately muted when the effect is turned off. Higher values, typically between 90 and 100, produce a long, sustained reverb of the delayed signal even after the effect has been set to bypass.
Another important feature is auto-panning. The Layer Delayer offers 8 different auto-panning modes that allow delayed signals to be dynamically panned across the stereo field. These include panning movements from left to right, from right to left, and ping-pong panning. For each mode, you can choose between a wide and narrow sweep width, and you can also adjust the overall sweep speed.
The Ibanez LD303 Multi Delay effects pedal offers flexible routing options. In addition to stereo in/out, it features an FX loop on the delay signal path as well as MIDI in/through. Via MIDI, all parameters in the Layer Delayer can be controlled using MIDI controllers. Additionally, the pedal supports MIDI clock commands, which can be used to synchronize the delay time.
