Neumann engineering
The newly developed transducer, which has been specially tuned to this microphone, is a fantastic match for impulses. Unusual for a large diaphragm capsule is also the high consistency of the five patterns, omnidirectional, cardioid, eight, with the intermediate stages width cardioid and hypercardioid. Not only does the TLM 107 deliver an optimal sound result in the cardioid position, it also delivers the highest precision over the entire frequency range with all other directional characteristics. The sound is always balanced with an almost linear reproduction up to 8 kHz and a soft increase of the highest frequencies, which gives presence and freshness to voices. Special emphasis was placed on the natural reproduction of speech sounds, especially the critical S-sounds. Acoustically optimized, the speaker basket has a low susceptibility to pop sounds. In addition, the transducer operates edge-contacted, with both diaphragms at mass level. In concrete terms, this means significantly less susceptibility to dust and moisture.
Uncompromising sound design
The transformerless circuit offers high linearity and high dynamics. The inherent noise of only 10 dB-A is practically inaudible, at the same time the TLM 107 is very level stable. The limit sound pressure level is 141 dB SPL and can be increased up to 153 dB SPL by means of pre-attenuation (pad). Thus, the TLM 107 transmits even the loudest instruments without distortion. The depth reduction with the linear, 40 Hz and 100 Hz positions is precisely tuned to the recording practice. The 40 Hz position cuts the background noise below the fundamental without side effects (the open E-string of the double bass is 41 Hz), while the 100 Hz position has been optimized for speech/vocals (100 Hz corresponds to the lowest notes of a baritone).
Innovative operating concept
For the first time with a microphone, all switching functions are intuitively controlled by a navigation switch. An optical highlight is the illuminated pattern display in the chrome ring, while the switching states of pad and low cut are indicated by LEDs to the left and right of the switch. In order not to irritate singers, the switch and display were arranged on the back side. After 15 seconds, the displays automatically go out.
