Discover the true voice of your microphones
The V 402 is a reference-class two-channel microphone preamplifier with an integrated studio-quality headphone amplifier. Its transformerless circuitry provides maximum transparency and pristine sound. The V 402 is thus the perfect complement to all Neumann microphones for unveiling the true character of voices and instruments.
The perfect partner
The V 402 is Neumann's first stand-alone microphone preamplifier, although several generations of high-quality modular preamps have been developed for Neumann mixing consoles in the past. These include, in particular, the now legendary V 476 B from the 1980s. Of course, the technology has evolved. And yet the basic question remains the same: What would be the perfect microphone preamplifier for Neumann microphones - or high-quality studio microphones from other manufacturers? All Neumann microphones, current and older, have unique sound characteristics. The V 402 preamplifier therefore leaves the sound characteristics of the microphone completely untouched; it neither adds nor subtracts anything. Because perfection cannot be perfected!
Natural richness
The top priorities in the development of the Neumann V 402 were maximum linearity and sound purity. The Neumann V 402 amplifies the microphone signal without unwanted coloration or artifacts such as noise and distortion. Although even cheap devices now claim "linearity" and "neutrality", all too often they lack finesse and fine tonal resolution; their output signal appears "lackluster" and as if covered by a "gray haze". It took a lengthy development process with extensive series of measurements and critical listening tests to create a preamplifier that deserves to wear the Neumann diamond. The V 402 faithfully preserves the original signal, allowing its sonic character to shine in unadulterated color.
The DI inputs were also designed with the highest degree of sonic purity in mind; they capture the sound of electric guitars and basses, as well as other instruments, without coloration or loss of detail. Sophisticated circuitry with very high input impedance ensures brilliant sound without audible noise.
A switchable 20 dB attenuation allows the V 402 to handle even very high-level sources with up to 28 dBu without distortion. The high-pass filter, which is also switchable, has been carefully optimized to eliminate pop sounds and impact noise without affecting the useful signal.
In addition, the V 402 has been equipped with a studio-quality headphone amplifier that ensures the best possible monitoring even during recording. Separate volume controls per channel allow you to set a latency-free monitoring mix on the fly, without changing the levels of the recording signals.
