Balanced or unbalanced, that's not a question with the BALUN/PLI05. BALUN stands for Balanced-Unbalanced. This means that due to the TRS (stereo) jacks used in the PLI05, both input and output can be operated balanced or unbalanced. The PLI05 is the little sister of the PLI02. Both boxes can be used for conversion from balanced to unbalanced, both boxes contain so-called line isolating transformers and are used for galvanic isolation. They are connected between mains-powered audio devices and thus safely exclude ground loop hum. The PLI02 is designed for use with XLR connectors and is designed for low impedances (600 ohms). The PLI05, on the other hand, with jack sockets, is more suitable for higher impedances. It can be operated in the wide range from 600 ohms to over 10 kOhms. However, to keep level losses low, the input impedance should not be lower than the output impedance.
