The DDJ-REV1 comes from the new DDJ-REV series of controllers, which feature specially designed layouts that emulate a professional DJM-S mixer + PLX turntable setup, with dedicated functions for open format and scratch DJs. Thanks to the DDJ-REV1's new control layout, there's plenty of room for mixing and scratching techniques. The tempo sliders are 60mm long - longer than those on the DDJ-SB3 - and run horizontally above the decks, while the performance pads have been moved to the mixer section to allow DJs to intuitively combine effects, trigger samples and scratch tracks.
The bigger the jog wheels, the better for scratching. The DDJ-REV1's jog wheels are the same size as those on the DDJ-SR2, a popular controller that ranks higher in Pioneer's DJ series. The Tracking Scratch function can help new DJs have fun scratching without having to do everything themselves. It silently returns the music to the cue point as soon as the DJ moves the jog wheel backward or lifts his hand away, saving him from having to close the fader and find the right place in the music to start again.
Furthermore, the output of the master audio is mixed with the sound from the microphone, so no separate sound card is needed to add vocals to a performance and route them through a computer. This means DJs can easily stream music and vocals directly from Serato DJ Lite. Serato DJ Lite is free to download on your PC or Mac, so you can simply plug in the DDJ-REV1 via the included USB cable and start DJing. The unit also supports Serato DJ Pro, which does mean a paid upgrade.
