The Proel FreeSubX 2x 8-inch Portable Battery-Powered Active Subwoofer was specifically designed as a portable, battery-powered subwoofer. It’s designed for mobile DJs, traveling artists, and use at outdoor events, combining a compact system with two 8-inch long-throw woofers, powerful Class-D amplification, and integrated DSP processing.
The FreeSubX is designed to add powerful low-frequency reproduction to portable setups. The two 8-inch woofers with 2-inch voice coils operate together with a total peak power of 600 W and a continuous power rating of 300 W. The frequency response ranges from 40 to 100 / 160 Hz, while the maximum sound pressure level is rated at 120 dB. Despite its design focused on portability, the system thus provides a powerful foundation for enhanced bass reproduction.
At the heart of the FreeSubX are two 8-inch long-throw woofers. Combined with 600 W of Class-D amplification and a sophisticated DSP, the system was developed for optimized acoustic reproduction. The goal is to deliver rich, precise, and powerful bass despite the subwoofer’s compact dimensions. The bass-reflex design further enhances the construction, which is specifically optimized for the low-frequency range.
Various controls are available for customizing the system. These include VOLUME, OUTPUT MODE, PHASE, FILTER, and OUTPUT FILTER. FreeSubX thus offers various options for configuring its playback and signal output within a mobile sound reinforcement setup. Signal processing is handled by the integrated DSP.
FreeSubX features stereo inputs and outputs, thereby supporting MONO or STEREO configurations. The connections include two balanced XLR-F inputs and two Z-balanced XLR-M outputs. This allows the subwoofer to be integrated into a variety of setups.
In addition, the system features built-in BLUETOOTH connectivity. It uses the Bluetooth 5.0 protocol for audio streaming. Additionally, the STEREO LINK or TWS function is available. This allows audio to be transmitted wirelessly directly from smartphones and tablets, which reduces the need for additional cable connections, especially in mobile applications.
The enclosure of the Proel FreeSubX 2x 8-inch portable battery-powered active subwoofer is made of MDF and high-strength polypropylene. The surface has a black textured finish, while the grille is made of powder-coated steel. A carrying handle mounted on top facilitates transport of the system. The FreeSubX can be positioned both vertically and horizontally, allowing it to adapt to various setup scenarios.
The dimensions are 255 mm x 542 mm x 530 mm. The weight is listed as 23.5 kg or 49.6 lb. Additionally, there is an M20 mounting point on the side for an optional speaker stand. This allows the subwoofer to be used as a base for an additional speaker within a compatible system.
For mobile use, the FreeSubX features a rechargeable lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 8,800 mAh. At medium volume, the battery life is up to 5 hours. Charging takes less than 4 hours. Additionally, the subwoofer has a compartment for a second optional battery, allowing for a battery swap during events or longer performances.
In addition to battery operation, the FreeSubX can be powered via a 100–240 V~, 50/60 Hz AC power supply. Power consumption is 300 W. This provides a suitable operating option for both mobile applications and situations with an available mains power supply.
The FreeSubX has been optimized to work in synergy with the portable battery-powered systems of the PROEL FREE series. At the same time, according to the manufacturer, the system is designed to extend the low-frequency response of compact active speakers. The combination of two 8-inch woofers, DSP, Class D amplification, Bluetooth audio streaming, and battery power bundles all the necessary features into a portable subwoofer.
