The SOMA Laboratory Lyra-4 White is a compact and powerful drone synthesizer designed specifically for experimental musicians and sound designers. As the little brother of the Lyra-8, the Lyra-4 offers a reduced yet versatile sound architecture in a portable format. The elegant white aluminum housing not only gives the device an aesthetically pleasing appearance, but also provides the necessary robustness for intensive live performances or studio use. With dimensions of 241 x 203 x 62 mm, the Lyra-4 is easy to transport and ideal for mobile sound artists who want to unleash their creative expression on the go.
SOMA Laboratory is known for its unique and unconventional synthesizers that turn traditional sound creation techniques on their head. The Lyra-4 White is no exception. Developed by Vlad Kreimer and his team, this instrument aims to inspire the user to explore new worlds of sound. SOMA Laboratory has made a name for itself in the music industry with its creative and experimental approaches and with the Lyra-4 offers a platform for artists who are looking for new sounds outside the mainstream.
The compact aluminum housing of the Lyra-4 White makes it ideal for use on the go. Its dimensions (241 x 203 x 62 mm) and low weight make it easy to transport. Whether in the studio, on stage or at home - the Lyra-4 adapts to any environment and still offers the full range of creative possibilities. Thanks to its reduced design compared to the larger Lyra-8, the Lyra-4 remains easier to handle without sacrificing sonic versatility.
The Lyra-4 White is based on four independent sound generators called "Voices". Each of these voices does not work like conventional VCOs, but uses a sound generator that is reminiscent of an electric organ. Alternatively, the Voices can also use FM synthesis, allowing a wide range of harmonically rich sounds to be generated. Each voice has its own envelope, which also functions as an FM operator. The influence of the voices on the FM synthesis decreases as the envelope decays, creating dynamic and organic sound progressions.
A particularly interesting feature of the Lyra-4 is the HypeLFO. This generates its waveforms using two LFOs (Low-Frequency Oscillators) whose frequencies are calculated by summation or multiplication. The HypeLFO can modulate either the voices or the mod delay and offers a synchronization mode that ensures rhythmic accuracy. These modulation options make the Lyra-4 a flexible instrument for everything from subtle sound changes to extreme effects.
The SOMA Laboratory Lyra-4 White is equipped with a powerful mod delay that adds an extra spatial dimension to the sound. The delay has a feedback function that allows the output signal to be fed back into the synthesizer, creating dense and atmospheric soundscapes. The self-modulation of the mod delay allows the output signal to influence the sampling rate of the delay, resulting in unique and often unpredictable sound patterns. The integrated distortion unit adds an extra layer of aggression and texture to the sound, ideal for harsh or industrial sound aesthetics.
The Lyra-4 White offers four CV inputs that allow external control signals to be fed in. This opens up numerous possibilities for integration into modular synthesizer systems or for control by other external devices. This flexibility makes the Lyra-4 an integral part of any modular setup and expands the creative possibilities of sound design.
Although the Lyra-4 is similar to the larger Lyra-8 in many ways, SOMA Laboratory points out that two Lyra-4 units are not sonically equivalent to one Lyra-8. The architecture of the Lyra-4 is specifically designed for four voices and therefore offers a different sonic dynamic than the eight-voice system of the Lyra-8, making the Lyra-4 an ideal choice for musicians looking for a more compact and portable version of the synthesizer, but still wanting to utilize the full potential of the Lyra engine.
The SOMA Laboratory Lyra-4 White is a compact and versatile drone synthesizer that is perfect for experimental music styles such as drone, ambient and noise. With its four independent voices, the special combination of organ and FM synthesis, the HypeLFO, mod delay and distortion, it offers an extraordinary variety of sounds. Thanks to its compact design, the Lyra-4 is also ideal for musicians who are often on the road or have little space in the studio.
If you are looking for a synthesizer that stands out from the crowd and allows you to create extraordinary soundscapes, the Lyra-4 White is an excellent choice. It is suitable for both beginners and experienced sound designers who are looking for new sonic horizons.
