The Mercury in the Vintage Edition is handmade in England from the best components. Most of the components used have a manufacturing tolerance of less than 1% - a real speciality in this price range. Accordingly, the technical values of the new microphone from Sontronics are excellent: below 12 dB(A) inherent noise, 18 mV/Pa sensitivity. A hand-selected ECC81/12AT7 vacuum tube from European production provides the pleasant tube sound full of character. This tube type leaves its sonic footprint even in microphones of the upper league.
Despite its low price, the Sontronics Mercury comes with additional features that greatly expand its capabilities. The most prominent feature is the adjustable polar pattern. Using a potentiometer on the Mercury's power supply, the polar pattern from omnidirectional to cardioid to figure-eight can be infinitely adjusted to the respective requirements in all intermediate forms. This makes it possible to effectively minimize crosstalk in more complex recording setups - the Mercury is the right microphone for almost any situation. The switchable high-pass filter can effectively keep subsonic noise and bass frequencies below 75 Hz out of the recording. The 10 dB pad extends the Mercury's handling capabilities with signals up to 135 dB.
