The Waldorf STVC is a string synthesizer with 49-key vocoder in a sturdy metal housing. The delivery includes a 44cm long gooseneck microphone with LED.
The string section starts with an oscillator bank based on octave splitters, followed by a complex mixer, an equalizer and an ensemble effect, just like the classic string machines of the 70s. A single control goes through registrations for violin, viola, cello, brass, organ, choir and more.
The solo section is a 16-part synthesizer that complements the string sounds. Here, too, a single controller drives through many useful settings. Solo is a companion of the strings, but it is powerful enough to play the leading role occasionally.
The vocoder replaces the equalizer of the string section with a filter bank that models the vocal tract based on the entered language. The fully polyphonic oscillator bank is used as a carrier signal and can therefore produce very intelligible speech or vocals. The formants can be modified so that the perceived gender changes. The adjustable jitter makes the voice rough or hoarse, even whispering. The solo section can be played by the vocoder or parallel to it.
