Neumann TLM 193 Product Details

TLM 193 studio microphone

The TLM 193* is a large-diaphragm cardioid microphone. It is the logical continuation of the Neumann tradition and provides high-quality technology for musicians and the home recording sector for medium budgets.

The microphone works with transformerless circuit technology, is extremely low-noise and offers maximum dynamic range. The frequency response is practically linear for the entire front half space. This means that signals incident from the side are also transmitted in a particularly clean and discolour-free manner.

The surface of the microphone capsule is at ground potential and is therefore insensitive to all types of interference and dirt. The microphone is supplied with a tripod joint.

Scope of application:

The TLM 193 is a cardioid microphone for professional recording and live applications. It is the perfect microphone for professional production studios, musicians and demanding home recording.

Polar pattern:

The large-diaphragm capsule of the TLM 193 works with the cardioid polar pattern.

Acoustic properties:

The TLM 193 is discussed from the side. Its front side is marked by the red Neumann emblem. The large diaphragm capsule in the wire mesh basket has a particularly flat frequency response, not only for sound incident from the front, but also for sound incident laterally within an angular range of more than ± 100°.

Therefore, the diffuse field frequency response of the TLM 193 to 10 kHz is parallel to the 0-degree curve. In practice, this concerns the sound components that reach the microphone indirectly via reflections in the recording room. This means that the sound character of the recorded reverberation sound is not altered by the microphone.

This distinguishes the TLM 193 from a pressure transducer with omnidirectional characteristic, in which diffuse and free-field frequency response cannot coincide for physical reasons.

Since no resonance effects are used to achieve the above-mentioned microphone characteristics, the impulse behavior of the microphone is excellent and it can transmit all equalization processes in music and speech unaltered.

Electrical properties:

The letters TLM stand for "transformerless microphone". The normally used output transformer is replaced in the TLM 193 by an electronic circuit, which provides good unbalance damping like a transformer.

Therefore, interference signals acting on the balanced modulation line are suppressed as usual. The inherent interference voltage of the TLM 193 has been greatly reduced compared to comparable microphone types, with the microphone transmitting a sound pressure level of 140 dB undistorted and providing a dynamic range of 130 dB (A-weighted) in accordance with DIN/IEC 651.

Operational safety:

The entire surface of the capsule including the diaphragms is at ground potential and is therefore insensitive to electrical and atmospheric influences as well as dirt. The capsule is elastically mounted for protection against structure-borne noise transmission.

Since the amplifier of the TLM 193 is linear up to 20 Hz, extremely low-frequency signals can also be transmitted undistorted. On the other hand, this makes the microphone more sensitive to low-frequency interference such as structure-borne noise or "pop" and wind noise.

It is therefore recommended to use the EA 1 elastic suspension, the PS 15 pop screen or the WS 89 draft shield.
