The Technics brand - sound culture since 1965
Technics was founded in Japan in 1965 and has stood for the highest audio quality and technological innovation ever since. The name itself is derived from the English word ‘Technology’ and reflects the company's aspiration to perfect the reproduction of music through advanced technology. Early on, Technics set itself the goal of not just playing music, but reproducing it as authentically as possible - just as it was originally intended by the artists. This quest for sonic perfection continues to characterise the brand to this day.
The SP-10 - the beginning of a revolution
A significant milestone in the history of the brand was the market launch of the SP-10 in 1970 - the world's first direct drive turntable for professional use. This ground-breaking development eliminated the typical problems of belt drives such as vibrations and irregularities in rotation speed. The SP-10 set a new standard, especially for broadcasters, and marked the beginning of a new era for vinyl enthusiasts and professionals.
The SL-1200 - From Hi-Fi to DJ standard
Just two years later, in 1972, Technics launched the SL-1200 onto the market. Originally designed for home use and hi-fi enthusiasts, the SL-1200 soon won over DJs with its robust construction, powerful direct drive and precise speed control. It quickly developed into a cult object and became a permanent fixture in clubs and on stages worldwide. Its ability to enable precise cueing, beatmatching and even scratching made it the first choice for DJs of all styles.
Progress through further development - The SL-1200MK2
With the SL-1200MK2, Technics launched a further developed version on the market in 1979, which is still very popular today. The introduction of a quartz-controlled direct drive and a pitch fader allowed even more precise control over the playback speed. These features made the MK2 the professional standard device for DJs - durable, reliable and technically at the highest level.
Return of a legend - The SL-1200G
Despite the discontinuation of production in 2010 due to digitalisation and falling demand, many fans still wanted the cult device to return. Technics responded in 2016 and presented the SL-1200G - a modern new edition that combined classic design elements with contemporary technology. Both DJs and audiophiles appreciated the combination of tradition and innovation.
An anniversary for DJ culture - the SL-1200M7L
To mark the 50th anniversary of the SL-1200 series, Technics released the limited special edition SL-1200M7L in 2022. In collaboration with seven internationally renowned DJs, seven models in different colours were created - a tribute to the deep connection between Technics and the global DJ scene.
