Piezo pickup on the bridge, clip-on microphone on the instrument or condenser microphone on a stand? All three solutions can work extremely well, but they capture different parts of the instrument's sound. Stage volume, studio use, freedom of movement and feedback risk therefore determine which solution is best for your setup.

A piezo sensor reacts to mechanical movement rather than primarily to airborne sound. On many string instruments it sits in or against a bridge wing, capturing the energy of the strings very directly.
Because the signal is taken directly from the bridge, a piezo pickup is less dependent on the position of the player in relation to a microphone.
This makes it particularly practical on loud stages, in bands and in setups where the musician moves while playing.
