The flugelhorn is a brass instrument and is very similar - concerning pitch and type of construction – to the trumpet, though it has a smoother sound. Originally the flugelhorn was a signal horn and was used in the military and by hunting parties. Its name stems from the positioning of the flugelhorn player at the flanks of a marching band or hunting party.
Flugelhorns are distinguished between jazz-flugelhorns with piston valves and concert-flugelhorns with rotary valves. The latter are mainly used for traditional brass music. The most common tuning for Flugelhorns is Bb.
