MEINL Sonic Energy 20" Chau Tam Tam Yin & Yang

MEINL Sonic Energy CHYY20 – 20" Chau Tam Tam Yin & Yang Gong

The MEINL Sonic Energy 20" Chau Tam Tam Yin & Yang (CHYY20) is a handcrafted gong from China that, with its symbolic engraving and powerful sound, touches you not only musically but also spiritually. Equipped with a traditional mallet and a matching gong cover, this Tam Tam offers everything you need for resonant rituals, meditations, or energetic sound journeys.

Inspired by the ancient concept of Yin and Yang, the interplay of opposing yet complementary forces, this gong represents balance, harmony, and wholeness. Whether as part of a sound bath, in sound therapy, during yoga sessions, or as a powerful element on stage—the CHYY20 combines aesthetic design with an expressive acoustic presence.

Traditional Chinese craftsmanship

Every Meinl Chau Tam Tam is handcrafted in China according to centuries-old tradition. The manufacturing process follows time-honored techniques that have been passed down through generations. This not only gives each instrument its unique character but also an authentic sound profile that connoisseurs and sound practitioners worldwide appreciate.

The curved outer rim—typical of Chau gongs—plays a crucial role in the instrument’s distinctive sound development. From gentle, floating tones to powerful, vibrating bursts, this gong offers an impressive tonal range.

Yin & Yang – Symbol of Inner Balance

The engraved Yin-Yang symbolism on the front of the gong lends the instrument a deep, spiritual dimension. In Chinese philosophy, Yin & Yang represent the principle of duality and unity: two opposites that do not fight each other but complement one another and together form a harmonious whole.

As Alfred Forke wrote: “The primordial principle moves and generates Yang. When the movement reaches its end, it becomes still, and this stillness generates Yin.” – This philosophy is also reflected in the gong’s playing characteristics: sound and silence, tension and stillness unite in a meditative flow of sound.

Sonority and diversity for meditation, therapy, and performance

The CHYY20 Tam Tam offers a deep, resonant fundamental tone that, depending on the striking technique, can transition into a powerful rumble or a floating hum. This makes the gong suitable for both calm, meditative use and dramatic musical performances.

Thanks to its flexible tonal characteristics, the CHYY20 harmonizes beautifully with other gongs, singing bowls, frame drums, or tongue drums. Whether played in an ensemble or solo, it always projects an impressive, spatially resonant presence.
