Xylophones, glockenspiels, metallophones and crotales are played with mallets and they are made of assorted materials like wood or metal. The sound elements are bar or plate-shaped - except for crotales, which are shaped like cymbals - and arranged side by side.
Instruments like xylophones or glockenspiels have a century-long tradition in different cultures. In the western world they are mostly used in classical orchestras, but even in jazz, fusion and world music they are at home.
