YM3438 FM Synthesizer
In the functionally and externally identical new edition of the popular retro synth, a pair of YM3438 chips is installed instead of the YM2612. YM3438 are a variant of the YM2612, which are identical in functionality and were used in the Sega Megadrive II. The circuit layout has also been updated, the FM chips are now socketed and can be easily replaced by the user thanks to a flap in the bottom of the case. This allows the installation of alternative FM chips (like the YM2612, modern alternatives or even custom sound chips). Different versions of the FM chips can be operated mixed, as both slots can be configured individually.
The MEGAfm MKII has the same audio circuitry and warm analog distortion as the MKI, so both chips sound very similar in the MEGAfm. The firmware works identically on both versions.
