SOMA Laboratory Lyra-8 White Product Details
SOMA Laboratory Lyra-8 White - The analog drone synth for borderline sonic experiences
The SOMA Laboratory Lyra-8 White, also known as the "White Angel", is an extraordinary analogue synthesizer that specializes uncompromisingly in the creation of experimental, ambient and drone-heavy soundscapes. This instrument takes musicians, sound artists and sound designers into a sound dimension beyond traditional musical instruments. With its eight independent oscillators, its unique user interface and the ability to create non-linear, non-tempered sounds, the Lyra-8 stands for a new kind of musical expressiveness - organic, intuitive, unconventional.
SOMA Laboratory - sound art from the avant-garde
SOMA Laboratory is an independent manufacturer of electronic musical instruments which, under the direction of Vlad Kreimer, has been causing a sensation in the synthesizer world for several years. Instead of following traditional conventions, SOMA pursues an artistic, almost philosophical approach: instruments should serve as tools for emotional and spiritual self-exploration. The products are radically different - in design, function and philosophy. The Lyra-8 White Angel embodies this vision in its purest form. It was designed in Russia and is manufactured with the highest precision in Poland. Each device is an expression of sonic individuality - a tool that inspires rather than imitates.
Technical details of the SOMA Laboratory Lyra-8 White
At the heart of the Lyra-8 White are eight analog oscillators - also known as "voices" - which are grouped into four pairs. Each oscillator has separate controls for tune (pitch), modulation and waveform (mixable between square and triangle). The voices can be controlled independently of each other and tuned continuously, allowing microtonality and complex harmonic structures to be realized. The aim is not to perfectly reproduce tempered scales, but to create organic sound textures that constantly change and flow into one another.
The Lyra-8 is not played via keys, but via capacitive metal contacts that are directly connected to the oscillators. This creates a direct, almost physical approach to the instrument. The intensity and expression can be controlled by finger pressure, which allows for a very dynamic playing feel. In addition, each oscillator pair has an attack-decay envelope that can be switched between "Fast" and "Slow" - ideal for switching between percussive accents and flowing soundscapes.
A particular highlight of the Lyra-8 is its feedback circuit, which can be activated if desired to create an additional layer of harmonic or chaotic sound behavior. This allows you to create extreme distortion, resonance or subtle feedback - ideal for drone, noise or experimental setups.
Three outstanding effects are available for sound shaping:
- Hyper LFO: A two-voice, voltage-controlled LFO with a variable waveform for modulating a wide range of parameters.
- Modulated Delay: A delay effect with chorus and vibrato components that creates flat, moving soundscapes.
- Distortion: An analog distortion that can be continuously integrated into the sound via a dry/wet mix control - from subtle to brutal.
The Lyra-8 offers a variety of connection options for external control and audio processing:
- Audio Output: 1x 6.3 mm mono jack
- External input: 1x 6.3 mm mono jack for feeding in external audio signals
- CV-In for delay modulation or oscillator control: 1x 6.3 mm mono jack each
- Hold gate input: 1x 6.3 mm mono jack for permanent activation of voices
- Headphone output: 1x 3.5 mm stereo jack
The robust metal housing in square format measures 266 x 266 x 62 mm and weighs around 2.5 kg - ideal for the studio or mobile use. The 12V power supply is included so that the Lyra-8 is ready for immediate use.
Why the SOMA Laboratory Lyra-8 White is in a class of its own
The Lyra-8 White is no ordinary synthesizer - it is an instrument for pioneers, sound researchers and musicians who want to break new ground. Thanks to its independent architecture and deliberately intuitive operation, the Lyra-8 is perfect for improvised live sets, experimental music, film scoring or meditative soundscapes. It does not create predefined "presets", but invites you to explore, listen, feel and create.
Thanks to its interactive interface and rich modulation possibilities, the sound process does not unfold linearly, but organically - like a musical being that changes in real time. Whether soft and spherical or chaotic and brute: the Lyra-8 covers an enormous sound spectrum and is always individual, lively and surprising.
Anyone who gets involved with this instrument will be rewarded with a unique sonic depth that goes far beyond what classic synthesizers have to offer. The Lyra-8 is a tool for exploring inner and outer worlds of sound - uncompromising, artistic and extraordinary.
