Thanks to a unique technique, the SPL De-Esser works very inconspicuously and sound-neutrally. S-frequencies are automatically detected and reduced by phase inversion. This process is clearly superior to conventional compression methods, since adjacent frequency ranges are affected far less.De-essing has no negative influence on the timbre of the voice; even intensive de-essing does not produce a nasal or lisping sound impression.In addition, the operation is extremely simple: thanks to the automatic threshold adjustment, which compensates for fluctuating distances of the speaker to the microphone, the operation is limited to setting the control intensity.

Concept:

The de-esser is a specialized tool for removing unwanted S or sibilant sounds. For this difficult task, SPL has developed a new circuit technology that combines efficient signal processing with maximum ease of operation. Especially in times of digital signal processing, early de-essing - directly after the microphone preamplifier - is of great importance. An S-sound with a high peak level on the hard disk minimizes the available headroom. The useful signal is also sampled with lower resolution and dynamics. The subsequent search for the S-sounds is time-consuming and therefore expensive. Furthermore, it is important to consider the psychological aspects that the speaker or singer can influence if sibilants are audible on the headphones. Often filtering with an EQ does not help either, as speech intelligibility suffers. Both will only cause the speaker or singer to focus their attention on a change in intonation and thus be distracted.

Mode of operation:

The De-Esser has a new circuit technology that automatically adjusts to the relevant frequencies and contracts the bandwidth so that only the range of the S-sound is processed, but adjacent frequencies remain untouched. This precisely defined range is then mixed back into the original signal in phase-inverted form, thus acoustically cancelling out the S-sound. The result combines extreme efficiency with the greatest possible sound neutrality. The character of each voice is preserved. By the way, you can also very well soften hard cymbal sounds or snares with the de-esser.

Operation:

The de-esser is extremely easy to use: The S-Reduction control determines the intensity of the processing. The reduction is displayed in the LED chain. Three further switch functions facilitate practical use. The Male/Female switch allows you to adjust the S-sound detection to the characteristics of female or male voices. The Auto-Threshold function automatically adjusts the threshold or application point when the input amplitude varies due to changes in the speaking position relative to the microphone. With Auto-Threshold enabled, the de-essing intensity remains constant at the value you set with S-Reduction - a tremendous help for inexperienced speakers or under live conditions. With conventional de-essers using compressor technology, the processing intensity decreases as the distance to the microphone increases. Downstream compressors or limiters then naturally react to the S-sounds that reappear. The disadvantage of weaker de-essing - bad enough in itself - therefore also leads to unwanted effects in the subsequent processing. Auto-Threshold prevents these disadvantages from occurring in the first place. The Active switch function lets you turn each channel on or off. Relay hard bypass circuitry, routes inputs directly to outputs in the event of a power failure or when switching off.
